Sri Ramana Maharshi suggests that fasting should be primarily mental, and regulating eating habits is more effective for spiritual progress. However, if one maintains a spiritual outlook during a fast, the mind can become pure and steady. Maharshi also advises against giving up sleep or food altogether, as it is not possible when the mind is engaged in ordinary pursuits. Instead, one should practice moderation in all things, including eating and sleeping.
